72 reasons to believe in SIP eLearning course (49 SIP Based Use Cases) - description

Contents and methodology

3 hours on exciting new SIP based services (Apps). This may help you to:

(a) Get a feel for SIP via illustrative use case examples.

(b) See practical use cases of SIP based networks.

(c) Get to think about (and possibly develop) new similar services/Apps

(d) Realize the power of the SIP endpoints and network elements.

(e) For some of the Apps - get to think when it might be best to develop the App on the endpoint, and when it may make more sense to develop it on the network server(s).

Intended audience

Any person interested in SIP and/or Internet Telephony

Prerequisites

A minimal SIP knowledge is assumed (The SIP messages and media streams in the examples are quite intuitive)

Outline

Module 1 - Call/Conference Apps (services)

Illustrates the way smart Apps can utilize the Call Processing functionality of SIP and its related technologies (protocols) to provide a major shift in the way we use our phones. Extensive use of INVITE related messages.

Module 2 - Event (Subscription and) Notification Apps

Illustrates the way smart Apps can utilize the Event Subscription & Notification framework of SIP to provide a whole new experience to users. For instance, no more missed calls that you never knew about because you cell phone was turned off. Very exciting developing area! Extensive use of SUBSCRIBE & NOTIFY related messages.

Module 3 - Instant Messaging (IM) and Presence Apps

This module goes way beyond the 'traditional' Instant Messaging (IM) and Presence. It focuses on the way IM & Presence can work with other SIP based areas (e.g. call processing) to provide a rich set of new services. For example, an attractive App is 'Voice Instant Messaging (VIM)'. The prediction is that VIM could generate $15 billion in service revenue worldwide by 2010.

Module 4 - Mobility/location Apps

In one word - IMS. Set of killer Apps, which aim to change the way we move around, communicate and keep track on each other. No more need to hang up a call when we leave home and go outside to our cars, no more worries about where (the heck) our teenage kids are hanging around. Drove blindly right into a huge traffic jam? make sure next time you got your SIP cell phone on you!

Module 5 - Security/Regulatory Apps

Just think how many lives could have been saved if the 911 center had the exact location (in granularity of meters) of the emergency callers. well - all of this is going to change now. BIG time! Some other key security/regulatory services are illustrated in this module.

Module 6 - Unified Messaging Apps

This module makes you realize that pretty soon some of the key communication/messaging services such as Email, Fax Voice mail and SMS that we use and love are going to merge into one unified communication/messaging service. Someone has just sent you an important fax while you are at the Gym? Not a problem - as long as your SIP phone is on you, you will get notified about it right away, and may even be able to retrieve it right there. same for emails, Voice mails etc.
