The '3G IMS Illustrated' (interactive & narrated) eLearning course - description - updated per latest of 3GPP R9/R10

Contents and methodology (3GPP is mainly illustrated, however 3GPP2, TISPAN and other Access Networks are covered as well)    

               

8 hours on the basics of IMS plus advanced topics. Utilizes the TDvL (Top Down via Links) and LBE (Learn By Example) methodologies. The Top level (201 pages) provides 5 first hours of IMS overview. Next two layers (298 pages) provide additional 3 hours of deeper dive into the details of the system plus coverage of advanced topics such as Security and Billing. 

          

Intended audience

 

Both technical and marketing people who seek an overview of IMS (over either GPRS, CDMA, Wi-Fi or other Access/PS-core Networks) and a potential deeper dive into the details. 

 

Prerequisites

          

Minimal SIP knowledge is assumed (We recommend taking this course after completion of the 'SIP Illustrated' course (or an equivalent of it)) 

 

Outline

 

Module 1 - 3G Packet domain Basics (3GPP TS 23.060) (4G Packet domain Basics (LTE) (3GPP TS 23.401/23.402) is covered by pkg #15)

          

Overview. Components of the 3G packet switched domain, SGSN, GGSN (PDSN), HLR, RNC and BS (BSC + PCF), PS operation, the PS domain as a data pipe for multimedia applications (e.g. IMS), Quiz.

          

Module 2 - From Ckt/Pkt to IMS

          

Overview. Components of the 3G circuit switched domain, MSC/VLR, G-MSC SCP, PSTN,  The motivation for convergence of domains, The diff alternatives for convergence, Ups and downs, Why IMS is the right alternative. Quiz.

 

Module 3 - 3G IMS architecture (per 3GPP TS 23.002, 23.228, 24.229, 23.218, 29.228, 29.328)

          

Overview. 4 Diff types of Components of IMS (Sig. Media, DB, AS), Home network versus visited network, X-CSCF, HSS, SLF, X-CGF, MGW, MRF-X, SIP AS, OSA SCS, Camel IMS SSF, Main interfaces/protocols, SIP, Diameter, H248, COPS. Realization of the standard components - IMS server. Advanced Topics - QoS, Billing, Subscription profile, Security framework (e.g. AKA authentication), Application servers and advanced services (e.g. Instant Messaging and Presence, location based services and more.), Interworking, Quiz.

 

Module 4 - 3G IMS operation (per 3GPP TS 24.228, 24.6xx series, TIA-1136/X.P0055)

                  

A typical IMS network in action, PS attachment, context (PDP or PPP) activation, IMS registration (+ authentication,  authorization and profile download), IMS origination - end to end detailed example (additional SIP messages, e.g. PRACK, UPDATE), conversation, tear down. 50 advanced call flow examples (AS/B2BUA Class 5 services, QoS control and HSS interaction), Quiz.

 

Module 5 - Marketing aspects

 

Overview. Voice/conference based services, Web access and messaging & presence based services, General applications, regulator. Detailed use case example - "Type of call based on called party preferences and presence". Quiz.

 

Module 6 - References/Quiz

          

3GPP, 3GPP2 and IETF Standard, Abbreviations. Summarizing Quiz.
